What made you choose the IMATEC study program?
I couldn’t properly decide whether to study rather technology or management for my Master’s. When I found out that the IMATEC program combines them both and in addition includes study experience in other countries, my decision was made.

Do you have a tip for applicants?
Be honest and self-confident in your application – in the motivation letter, and during the interviews. It will most probably lead to the moment when you will enjoy your studies because your profile and expectations match the program content.

What would you recommend to new IMATEC students?
Discover what subjects or topics you may like. Take advantage of this possibility to try things that you might never notice exist. Challenge the boundaries of your comfort zone! 😊

What was the hardest part of your studies so far?
The hardest was moving between the countries, getting used to new customs, new ways of living, and also the logistics that go along with that. But with every other semester, it is getting better and easier.

What was the best part of your studies so far?
The best part was definitely meeting my fellow students! Getting to know their culture, understanding their point of view, but also realizing the amount of similarities, not only differences. I found here people I wish would remain in my life forever.

What made you choose the IMATEC study program?
The opportunity to study such an impactful subject as circular economy in two different dimensions – Technology and management – has caught my attention since the beginning. In my opinion, IMATEC is a Master’s program that gives you an interdisciplinary way to be a future Circular Economy professional with a complete background to start your career in this field. Besides, the chance to live in three different European countries and experience their lifestyle is an amazing factor that teaches us so much and enriches our world perspectives!

Do you have a tip for applicants?
It is important to put effort into the preparation of the required documents. Besides the “traditional” ones such as previous studies transcripts, passport, or any other ID, it is worth writing a motivation letter that not only gives an introduction of you and your reasons for applying but also reflects your beliefs in pursuing a career in Circular Economy, and in being a future agent against Climate Change. In addition, of course, be aware of the deadline and avoid finishing the application on the last day!

What would you recommend to new IMATEC students?
The IMATEC program provides a fulfilling and unique lifetime experience, but be aware of the changes along the way. You will be living in different countries and moving every six months. You will have to deal with a lot of variables at the same time: a new study routine, a new city, language, and even daily items you will have to discover and adapt, for example: where should I do my groceries? Or how does the public transport work here? I know it seems simple, but in the end, when all of that is combined, it can be overwhelming. Thus, be open-minded and resilient, this will make the experience go more smoothly, and try to appreciate the opportunities of growing along the journey!

What was the hardest part of your studies so far?
I believe the hardest part is to combine the adaptation process to a new culture with the new study routine that each University demands. Not only we were moving from city to city, but the Universities present different ways of lecturing, doing the examination, and so on. It can be quite demanding to adjust to all of the factors at the same time.

What was the best part of your studies so far?
I have to say that the content of the subjects is my favorite part! After one year of the Master’s, I feel that I am on the right track to move my career to the Circular Economy field. It has been a rich experience, full of new concepts and real-life applications. It is so satisfactory to know more about the field and to see this knowledge being applied worldwide. Also, I like to see how the subjects complement themselves during the Master’s semesters. For example, even currently studying at Åbo Akademi, I can affirm that I still remember and apply what I learned at UCT Prague.

I chose IMATEC because I want to build a career in waste and wastewater management. A master in circular economy gives more insight into innovative ways of use of resources derived from the waste management process in order to achieve zero waste. A master in circular economy challenges me to think outside the box and to research more innovative technologies, processes and products that are more sustainable and greener to the planet.

Ironically, the best part of my studies so far is not the academics even though that has also been great. I enjoy learning about other cultures and this Erasmus journey gives me the opportunity to do that. By interacting with diverse cultures, I have had the opportunity to share my culture and also learn a lot about other cultures.

To the incoming cohorts, I am an introvert and so I understand how difficult it is to leave familiarity behind and start afresh in Europe. My advice is to be yourself and take part in some of the many activities offered and over time as you make friends, you will feel less alone and isolated. And always ask for help if you need it; it is ok not to know everything.

What made you choose the IMATEC study program?
I believe IMATEC is the ideal program that integrates all the key concepts I need to achieve my goals: materials science, waste management, sustainability, entrepreneurship, and life cycle assessment. The integration of chemical engineering, management, and business governance knowledge will provide me with a holistic and multifaceted approach to addressing sustainability and advancing the circular economy. This broad and extensive skill set will empower me to develop innovative solutions for real-world environmental challenges.

What was the hardest part of your studies so far?
Moving from one country to another can be a double-edged sword. I consider it as one of the best parts since I get to live in 3 totally different countries, learning about the idiosyncrasies of each nation, whether it’s their people, weather, culture, food and/or language. I not only discovered a lot about myself, but also learn new things, travel around and explore different places. However, moving is also a struggling and challenging experience. With all the unpacking/packing hassles, adjustments and basically starting to adapt again. Also, since we will be studying in three universities, each one has its own system, rules and grading. It can be a daunting task at first, but it goes easy with time.

What was the best part of your studies so far?
First, it was a truly a great opportunity to study at three prestigious universities, learn more about circularity encompassing science, technology, and management. Secondly, studying at these universities expanded my network and made me more curious about other concepts, and not box my technical knowledge on what I know now, but to think further and deeper. Lastly, I am also genuinely happy to meet similar minded people who I now consider my friends, and maybe even colleagues in the near future.

What made you choose the IMATEC study program?
I chose the IMATEC program because it was a newly introduced program in the Erasmus Mundus catalogue, and its focus aligned perfectly with my interests and long-term goals. I have always been passionate about reducing waste, promoting recycling, and improving environmental sanitation in Nigeria. This concern stems from the lack of systems in Nigeria to effectively manage and recycle plastic waste. The country is overrun with plastic bottles that could be repurposed into clothes, bags, leather, or even new plastics, yet we continue to rely heavily on the importation of new materials. The IMATEC program presented the opportunity to learn advanced technologies in waste management, environmental sustainability, and materials engineering, which I believe are essential for tackling these pressing issues.

What would you recommend to new IMATEC students?
My advice to new IMATEC students is to make the most of every moment. It’s important not to miss any opportunities for fun and relaxation because you will need them to balance the demands of the program. Erasmus programs are known for being rigorous, and there will be both challenging and rewarding times. To avoid feeling overwhelmed, be sure to explore your surroundings and enjoy your time. However, while having fun, don’t lose sight of your academic goals. It’s crucial to stay focused on your studies. Engaging in group discussions or study sessions can significantly enhance your understanding. While independent study works for some, learning with dedicated peers often leads to better results. Lastly, never hesitate to reach out to your professors or program coordinators when you need assistance. They are always willing to help, and their support has been invaluable to me. Best of luck with your journey!

What was the best part of your studies so far?
The IMATEC program has exceeded my expectations from the very start. I’ve experienced exceptional lecture delivery by outstanding professors, well-equipped lecture rooms, industry visits, cultural exchanges, and networking opportunities. One of the highlights has been my summer internship at Bayer Hispania, a key branch of Bayer AG known for producing active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for Aspirin. This industrial placement was fully organized by the program, and I am deeply grateful for that opportunity. Additionally, the program coordinators’ responsiveness and dedication to supporting students through any challenges or concerns have been remarkable. Their commitment to our success truly sets this program apart.

What made you choose the IMATEC study program?
I chose the IMATEC program because it proposes a new and stimulating idea of integrating circular economy, technologies and management concepts in industries.

Do you have a tip for applicants?
In your application, try to highlight what would you like to learn in the Master’s degree and how do you think this specif program would help you in your future career, which subjects and features of the program appeal to you and why.

What would you recommend to new IMATEC students?
As a new student, try to balance your studies from the beginning of the semester with some time to socialize with your new classmates and also explore the cities you’ve just moved to. Along with the theoretical knowledge you will acquire in these two years, try to expand your network by getting to know your classmates, professors and locals. Keep in mind that there will be a lot of moving from one country to another, which can cause some anxiety, but in the end, it will all work out. Do your best to make the most of it!

What made you choose the IMATEC study program?
Having seen the poor waste management practices in Uganda, I knew something could be done to handle the waste in a more sustainable manner. However, I still needed to gain further knowledge on the concept of sustainability and Circular Economy and therefore, while searching for scholarships, I was looking for a program that gave me an intersection between my undergraduate studies in chemical engineering and the future I wanted in environmental engineering. And after reading the curriculum of IMATEC, I remember saying “this is it!”.

Do you have a tip for applicants?
Yes, for the IMATEC applicants, I would advice that you clearly know your motivation and explicitly explain it throughout the letter. Don’t leave room for the panelists to ask questions because you’ll have lost the chance to explain yourself since the deadline has passed. However, don’t be afraid to try… Like they say, “Shoot your shot”.

What would you recommend to new IMATEC students?
Enjoy your time throughout the program, and as much as we all love to procrastinate, try to read a little bit of something every now and then because if left for last minute, it can get reaaally frustrating.

What was the hardest part of your studies so far?
It would be the changes in the education systems per country. For example, I had never done an oral exam, and we had more than one at UCT, Prague. Also, language barrier can be challenging especially for a country like Spain, but they make up for it by being very nice. Trust that someone will smile at you at least once every day!

What was the best part of your studies so far?
During a module on waste management, we picked Uganda as a case study. And it was great working with colleagues and understanding the challenges facing the country, some of the sustainable practices in place and suggesting what Uganda could do to improve her systems.

Different institutions and professors in each country also have varying styles and expectations. Engaging with classmates and helping each other can accelerate our mutual progress. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance from others.

What was the best part of your studies so far?
What impressed me the most was the cultural diversity. After spending a semester amidst the ancient and beautiful architecture of Prague, we began a new life under the sunny skies and along the azure coastlines of vibrant Spain. I deeply cherish the joyful times spent in Oviedo and Gijón, yet I also eagerly look forward to the Nordic life in Finland, where we will chase after snow and the Northern Lights.

What made you choose the IMATEC study program?
Growing up in Zambia, a country heavily dependent on hydroelectricity, I was exposed to frequent power cuts due to over-reliance on this energy source, despite the abundance of sunlight. The reliance on copper mining further amplified my concerns about sustainability, as copper is a non-renewable resource, and Zambia’s mining practices did not seem sustainable. Before applying to IMATEC, I worked for a consultancy firm where I saw first-hand the negative effects of not utilizing resources efficiently, and the lack of implementation of circularity principles, such as reusing materials and leveraging naturally available resources—whether in energy generation, rural sanitation, or copper mining.

Initially, I believed the solution to these challenges was purely an engineering one. However, after working with various consultants, I realized the complexity of the issue and the need for skills beyond engineering – particularly in finance, management, and governance. So, when I discovered IMATEC, I was thrilled by the program’s holistic approach. It doesn’t just focus on the engineering aspects but also integrates management and science, which aligns perfectly with the solutions I wish to bring to Zambia. IMATEC’s comprehensive and preventative approach to circularity is what drew me to the program.

Do you have a tip for applicants?
My advice is to go beyond focusing solely on your academic achievements. To make your application stand out, it’s important to gain practical experience, whether through work, volunteering, or international exposure. Additionally, having someone review your statement of purpose and CV can be incredibly helpful. Lastly, preparation is key. Start preparing early, even if you’re planning to apply in a couple of years. Research how to make your application competitive because, as the program becomes more established, the competition increases.

What was the hardest part of your studies so far?
For me, the most challenging part was learning management courses like finance, as they were entirely new to me. However, I would reassure new students that these subjects are not too difficult as long as you are proactive, particularly by working through homework before attending lessons. It makes understanding the material much easier.

What was the best part of your studies so far?

The best part of the IMATEC program has been the opportunity to travel to different countries and interact with people from diverse cultures. This has exposed me to different ways of thinking, having fun, and even cooking! The global exposure has been enriching and has broadened my perspective in ways I couldn’t have imagined.
