If your Transcript of records does not indicate the ECTS credits directly, you can use the following formula to re-calculate the number of your local credits to ECTS. To do so, write down a list of courses in mathematics, physics, and in chemistry together with the number of credits obtained in the particular courses, and use the following formula for re-calculation:
ECTS_course = Credit_points_course * (60 * Years_of_degree)/(Total_credits_of_degree)
For example:
You have obtained a total of 140 credits in a 4-year BSc programme.
You have taken a 2-credit course in physics, and you want to know the number of ECTS credits for this course:
ECTS_course = 2 * (60 * 4)/140 = 3,4
1 ECTS corresponds to 25-30 hours of all the time the student spends on the course (lectures, seminars, home preparation, …).
At UCT Prague, 1 ECTS is equal to 28 hours.
After checking the formal requirements, UCT Prague will pass the application files to a Joint Selection Committee. The Committee, comprising representatives of all consortium members, will make a ranking based on well-established and proven procedures used by AAU to select students for their MSc program in Sustainable Chemical and Process Engineering.
The scoring will be as follows:
Quality of the background (Bachelor) studies
This criterion allows to assess the quality of previous studies of the applicants. This is done on by categorizing the educational institutions based on the Ranking web of universities (http://www.webometrics.info/en).
The points are awarded as follows:
0 – not ranked among top 10 000 universities
1 – ranked on position 3 001 to 10 000
2 – ranked on position 1 001 to 3 000
3 – ranked among top 1 000 universities
Studies in mathematics, physics and chemistry
This criterion ensures that the students have sufficient knowledge in chemistry, physics and mathematics to study courses that build on the basic knowledge of chemistry, physics and mathematics. The number of ECTS credits obtained in these subjects is the basis for assessing the compatibility of the previous studies with the IMATEC program. The minimum level of the following ECTS credits in bachelor studies is required:
Mathematics – at least 5 ECTS credits
Physics – at least 5 ECTS credits
Chemistry – at least 20 ECTS credits
In total, a maximum of 9 points (=a maximum of 3 points from each discipline) is awarded to applicants based on (re-calculated) number of ECTS credits from their previous studies. The applicants who will receive 0 points in at least one of the disciplines will be not further considered. Similarly, applicants who fail to provide their transcripts of records will not be considered either.
The points awarded based on the received ECTS credits are summarized in the following table:
Subject/points | 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 |
Chemistry | <20 ECTS | 20 to <40 ECTS | 40 to <60 ECTS | at least 60 ECTS |
Physics | <5 ECTS | 5 to <10 ECTS | 10 to <15 ECTS | at least 15 ECTS |
Mathematics | <5 ECTS | 5 to <10 ECTS | 10 to <15 ECTS | at least 15 ECTS |
Previous academic success and history
The study results of the applicants from their previous studies are evaluated based on the CGPA. The points are awarded based on the percentage of the maximum CGPA achievable to take into account the different grading scales of the applicants from different countries / universities. The points are awarded as follows:
0 – CGPA is less than 60% of the maximum achievable CGPA
1 – CGPA is at least 60%, but less than 70% of the maximum achievable CGPA
2 – CGPA is at least 70%, but less than 80% of the maximum achievable CGPA
3 – CGPA is at least 80%, but less than 90% of the maximum achievable CGPA
4 – CGPA is at least 90% of the maximum achievable CGPA
Practical engineering or circular economy experience
The applicants can receive up to 2 points for the previous practical experience (jobs, internships, etc.) based on their CV. The points are awarded as follows:
0 – no practical experience at all
1 – practical experience in total (cumulative) length of less than one year
2 – practical experience in total (cumulative) length of at least one year
Motivation letter/Motivation Video
The applicants can receive up to 3 points for their motivation. The strength of motivation, authenticity and convincingness are the key criteria by which the motivation letters / videos are judged by the evaluators.
Prizes, awards or other merits
The history and previous successes of the applicants are evaluated based on their CV. Awards received e.g. for high CGPA scores or awarded scholarships based on the study results are not considered here as they are already accounted for in the “academic success” criterion. Up to 2 points can be awarded to the applicants. The points are awarded as follows:
0 – no eligible awards
1 – awards not related to the field of studies
2 – awards related to the field of studies
The top 50 applicants based on the sum of points received from the aforementioned criteria will be invited to participate in admission interviews. All applicants having the same final score as the applicant ranked at position number 50, will be invited to the interview, i.e. 50 is the minimum number of applicants to be invited to the admission interview. The interviews will be held online, the selected applicants will be notified about the date and time in advance.
The length of the admission interview is 15 minutes for each of the applicants. The applicants have first the possibility to interduce their experience and motivation within 3 minutes. After that they answer questions of the Joint Selection Committee members (the JSC consists of at least one representative from each partner, i.e. it has at least 3 members). Finally, the applicants have the possibility to ask questions. Each of the JSC members scores each of the interviewed applicants on a scale 0 – 10 points. The points awarded to each applicant are determined by discussion and agreement of all JSC members.
The overall sum of the points received from the individual admission criteria and from the admission interview will determine the final ranking of the applicants.
Applicants will be notified about the admission results by March 15 at the latest.
The academic year starts in September. Applicants are expected to arrive in the Czech Republic in the first week of September.
In the case of disagreement with the decision of the Joint Selection Committee and feeling that the Committee has not handled the applicant’s application in line with the application and selection procedures as described on this website, the applicant can appeal against the decision.
The applicant will need to do so within seven days of receiving the notification, by filing an Appeal Letter addressed to the Joint Selection Committee stating the reason why the applicant disagrees with the decision made and providing clear justifications. The Appeal Letter is to be sent by email to mundus@vscht.cz.
The appeal will be analyzed by the Joint Selection Committee and if justified, the application will be re-evaluated.
The applicant will be informed about the final decision within 14 days.
NonEU citizens must apply for a long-term residence permit for the purpose of studying in the Czech Republic.
An appointment at the respective embassy must be scheduled in order to apply for the residence permit. The appointment can be either scheduled by the applicant himself/herself OR applicants from certain listed countries can apply for an appointment at the Czech Embassy through a governmental project for visa facilitation called Režim Student (Student Mode).
Before the applicant schedules an appointment at the respective embassy, UCT Prague will issue a set of “visa documents” (Letter of Acceptance & Accommodation Confirmation) for him/her, and send the documents to the applicant by a delivery company.
Režim Student is a governmental project designed to facilitate the visa procedure for selected students.
When nominating, the university must submit the following documents:
When students are nominated, the Ministry then has 3-5 working days to process the nominations and based on certain criteria choose, which nominations are successful.
If the nomination is successful, then the Embassy assigns an appointment for residence permit application submission – the appointment is usually assigned within 1–4 weeks. If the application for the visa is submitted completely, the Ministry of Interior then has 60 days to approve the visa. Then an appointment for visa collection is scheduled.
It is advised to arrange an apostille/superlegalization as soon as possible, so you will have the documents ready when applying for the visa. Also, visit the website of the respective Czech embassy to learn the required documents to bring to a visa appointment.
Note that it is more than recommended to arrange an appointment at the respective embassy in May at the very latest. The academic year starts in September, and residence permit approval takes 60–120 days!
Especially applicants from India, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Ghana, Sri Lanka, Bhútán, Chad, Cameroon, Maledives, and Nepal, should apply for the residence permit AS SOON AS POSSIBLE once they receive a Letter of Acceptance because of the competition at the embassies in Abuja (Nigeria), Accra (Ghana) and New Delhi (India) which is enormous, and the appointment slots are very limited!
We encourage all applicants to visit the website of the respective Czech embassy for their country and learn in advance what documents are required when applying for a residence permit.
Please note that applying for a long-term residence permit is crucial for a smooth transition between the partner universities. The Czech Ministry of Interior offers also an option of applying for a long-term visa, however, this option is not suitable for this type of study programme.
It may happen that, under certain circumstances, arranging for a Spanish or Finnish residence permit will be required. Students will be notified about this matter in a timely manner.
